West Palm Beach is a city of distinct neighborhoods, and where you stay shapes the entire experience of your visit. Stay downtown and you're walking to restaurants and the waterfront. Stay in El Cid and you feel like a local in a historic Florida neighborhood. Stay near Palm Beach island and you have easy access to Worth Avenue and The Breakers. Here's how to choose.
Downtown West Palm Beach
Best for: First-time visitors, couples, anyone who wants walkability
Downtown WPB is the most convenient base for a short trip. Clematis Street, the waterfront, the Green Market, Rosemary Square, and the bridge to Palm Beach island are all within easy reach. Vacation rentals here tend to be condos and loft-style units, which suits couples and solo travelers perfectly. Weekends get lively, so if you want quiet evenings, look slightly away from Clematis.
El Cid and Flamingo Park
Best for: Families, longer stays, guests who want a residential feel
El Cid is one of West Palm Beach's most beautiful neighborhoods — a historic district with Mediterranean Revival and Mission-style homes from the 1920s and 30s lining quiet streets near the Intracoastal. It's a 10-minute drive from downtown but feels like a completely different world. Flamingo Park, nearby, has a similar residential character with bungalows and tree-lined streets. Both areas are excellent for families who want space, a pool, and a true neighborhood experience.
Northwood Village
Best for: Artists, creatives, travelers who want something off the beaten path
Northwood Village has been West Palm Beach's arts district for decades. Independent galleries, vintage shops, coffee roasters, and a Thursday evening gallery walk make this neighborhood feel alive in a way that polished resort areas simply don't. It's walkable within the neighborhood and a short rideshare from downtown. Vacation rentals here tend to have character — think bungalows with original tilework and thoughtful decor.
Near the South End: SoSo District
Best for: Food lovers, travelers who want the Norton Museum nearby
The South of Southern (SoSo) district sits near South Dixie Highway, which has quietly become one of Palm Beach County's best restaurant and antique corridors. If your trip is centered around the Norton Museum, good food, and a more relaxed pace, this area is worth considering. It's also a convenient base for day trips to Delray Beach and Boca Raton.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors on a short trip, downtown or El Cid. For families with kids or stays of a week or more, El Cid, Flamingo Park, or a waterfront home near the Intracoastal. For guests who've been to WPB before and want something different, Northwood Village.
